Claiming responsibility for the bomb blast that took place on the evening of January 4 at the gate of Yumnam Basanta alias Tomba at Yaiskul Hiruhanba Leikai, the proscribed United National Liberation Front (UNLF) has stated that it was served as a final warning to Basanta who had taken possession of the organisation’s funds and had gone into hiding from the organisation for the past three years.

A release signed by director, department of publicity, M. Sak-hen clarified that the bomb explosion carried no intention to harm or terrorise the public. Basanta had taken possession of a large amount of funds belonging to the organisation and started making challenges to UNLF by ignoring the repeated requests for communication with the organisation, it said.

As for the offence he committed, he deserves nothing less than capital punishment but considering that he might have faced inconveniences, UNLF had been waiting for a long time to discuss and sort out his inconveniences, the release informed.

However, UNLF would like to inform the people of Manipur that Basanta is a criminal for being a runaway after possessing the funds meant to be utilised for the self-liberation movement and further challenging the organisation in order to use the funds for his own personal gains, it stated.

Therefore, UNLF appeals local Meira Paibis, senior citizens and members of locals clubs not to support Basanta but impose a “social boycott” against him, it further stated. The organisation appeals those who are close to Basanta to keep physical distance from him so that they, along with civilians, may avoid any untoward incidents during UNLF’s further attempts at punishing him, it added.
