Sri Lankan Navy personnel accused of chasing away over 2000 Tamil Nadu fishermen
Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu have accused the Sri Lankan Navy personnel of attacking a number of trawlers, snapping their fishing nets and chasing them back to Indian waters while they were fishing near the Katchatheevu islet on Tuesday.
According to a fisheries official in Rameswaram the nets of several mechanized boats were snapped after rounding them up allegedly by Sri Lankan naval personnel near Katchatheevu islet.
When they were fishing near the Katchatheevu Islet, the Sri Lankan Naval fast patrol crafts encircled at least 50 fishing boats, pelted stones and soda bottles, the fishermen alleged.
More than 2,000 Tamil Nadu fishermen, who had ventured into the sea in 490 mechanized fishing trawlers on Monday, were forced to return without their catch, according to the fishermen’s official.
Earlier this month Sri Lankan Navy personnel have chased away over 4000 Tamil Nadu fishermen while fishing in Sri Lankan waters near the Katchatheevu islet.
