Sri Lanka Police have imposed and island wide Curfew from 9 pm today to 4 am Tuesday as anti-Muslim violence escalated in the country.

Earlier a police curfew was imposed in the entire Northwestern Province as the anti-Muslim riots sparked in Chilaw spread through the province. The police also imposed a curfew in Gampaha police division in Western province until 6 am tomorrow.

Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe appealed the public to remain calm and not to instigate civil unrest swayed by the false inflammatory information spread through social media hampering the security forces and police who are working tirelessly to apprehend the Muslim terrorists.

He said the security forces are working diligently to ensure security and arrest the terrorists and asked the people not to hamper security forces in their operations with civil unrest.

“I appeal to all citizens to remain calm and not be swayed by false information. Security forces are working tirelessly to apprehend terrorists and ensure the security of the country, but each time there is civil unrest, we increase their burden and hamper ongoing investigations,” the Premier said.
