Sri Lankan police on Sunday imposed a curfew with immediate effect in the western coastal town of Chilaw due to a tense situation arose in the town.

The curfew will be removed tomorrow at 4 am, Police Media Spokesperson SP Ruwan Gunasekara said at a media briefing today.

The Police imposed the curfew Sunday afternoon and announced that it would take effect till 6.00 am Monday. However, as the tense situation has been brought under control, the police had decided to lift the curfew at 4 am Monday.

Police Media Spokesperson earlier said a tense situation had arisen in the area as a result of the public protesting against a person who spread rumors through the social media inciting racial violence.

“The man who released rumors to the social media has also been arrested,” SP Gunasekara said.

Reports said tension was brewing since Saturday between the Catholics and Muslims in the Christian dominated town. It has been reported that a mosque and few shops owned by Muslims were attacked by a mob.
