SLFP confirms President as the party’s candidate at next presidential election

A proposal to present President Maithripala Sirisena as the Sri Lanka Freedom Party’s candidate at the next presidential election is approved at the party’s reorganization meeting yesterday (01). The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) National Organizer, MP Duminda Dissanayake, has submitted a proposal that incumbent President Maithripala Sirisena should be the party’s candidate at the 2019 presidential election. Parliamentarian Duminda Dissanayake’s proposal to nominate President Sirisena as SLFP’s next candidate for presidency was seconded by former minister Tissa Karaliyadda. All party officials attending the meeting have raised their hands and declared approval for the proposal. A proposal presented at the inaugural meeting of the party’s reorganization program in Anuradhapura has also been approved by all the party officials in Anuradhapura district and district organizers. SLFP General Secretary Parliamentarian Dayasiri Jayasekara and SLFP Senior Vice President Parliamentarian Nimal Siripala de Silva joined MP Duminda Dissanayake at the occasion. 

Sri Lanka President Maithripala Sirisena says that 2019 is an election year and a year which will establish a new government. Speaking during the opening ceremony of the new Sri Lanka Freedom Party office in Colombo, President Sirisena said all who love the country must unite together to build the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) as a powerful people’s movement to defeat all the evil forces against the country within the next three months. “We are talking today not of defeating political parties or leaders, but about identifying and defeating the treacherous forces to the country,” he said. Speaking further, the President said it is the responsibility of everybody to prepare the SLFP, which is a people-oriented, patriotic party, said the President, and called on the people to extend fullest support to accomplish that responsibility.

In every political party there are people who love the country and there are people who are against the motherland think only of themselves, said the President and added that in this political journey it is essential to identify clearly the honest leaders and activists required for this purpose. The new office has been established at No. 65, Ananda Rajakaruna road, Colombo 10 as part of establishing new district offices of the party across the country under the restructuring process of the SLFP.
