Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn arrives at Imphal, attends Sangai Festival at BOAT

Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Kingdom of Thailand was today accorded warm welcome led by chief minister, N. Biren Singh on her maiden visit to Manipur.

The Air India plane carrying the princess landed at the Bir Tikendrajit International Airport at 5 pm. The princess was accompanied by officials of Royal Thai Embassy, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Thailand, media team from Thailand and also the officials of Indian Ministry of External Affairs.

The chief minister, PHED minister, Losii Dikho, Agriculture minister, V. Hangkhalian, chief secretary, J. Suresh Babu, DGP, L.M. Khaute and other high level government officers, top police personnel received the princess at the airport tarmac.

The princess is on a two-day visit to Imphal to witness the Annual Manipuri Sangai Festival 2018.

Later, the princess attended Manipur Sangai Festival at Bhagyachandra Open Air Theatre (BOAT). At the festival venue, she was accompanied by Thailand Ambassador to India, Chutintorn Gongsakdi, officials of Royal Thai Embassy, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Thailand, media team from Thailand and also the officials of Indian Ministry of External Affairs.

The princess and her entourage along with chief minister, Biren arrived at BOAT, where cultural programmes of the festival were held, at around 7:45 pm. Cabinet ministers, chairmen, MLAs, chief secretary, DGP and top civil and police officials were also present at the occasion among others.

The princess was accorded a warm welcome by the scores of people who had gathered at the BOAT. She witnessed the mesmerising cultural performances both from Manipur and Thailand.

Speaking on the occasion, Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn said that it is indeed a great pleasure to visit the State and experience the Sangai Festival. She appreciated the government’s initiative of ‘Act East Policy’ and mentioned that Thailand would extend co-operation in this regard.

It may be mentioned that the princess will also visit Sendra, Keibul Lamjao and Kangla tomorrow.
