Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says that New Democratic Front (NDF) candidate Sajith Premadasa is the only candidate who can protect the democracy in a free society that has no poverty.

The Prime Minister made this assertion participating in the event held to sign the Memorandum of Understanding between the coalition parties of the United National Party (UNP) led Democratic National Front today at the Taj Samudra Hotel in Colombo. Former President and former leader of Sri Lanka Freedom Party Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga also signed the MoU.

Speaking at the event, the Prime Minister said today there is a free society in the country where anyone can criticize him and still can go home with no white vans coming after them. Mr. Wickremesinghe added that the people who prevented the disappearances of people like Eknaligoda and stopped the white van culture, and the people who brought genuine democracy to the country gathered at the venue to sign the MoU today.

The Prime Minister said that after five years, a free society has been created in the country and pointed out that condition has been created where no one can be taken to the police without law. He said that no journalist in the country is disappearing today.

“Instead of the white van today only the SuwaSeriya comes. The journalist who scolds me and goes home will return to work next morning to blame me again. We should carry forward such a free society.” He said that today it is under threat and some say that due to the threat to national security there is no need for a free environment. Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said all those involved in the Easter Sunday attack have already been arrested and that it was done by the law.

The Premier recalled that he called for the elimination of the terrorist organization that threatens the national security and the destruction of the ISIS and commended the elimination of its leader.

The Prime Minister said that he would do everything necessary to protect the country’s free society. “If the freedom we won is not carried forward, the country will be fall into a very dark era. He pointed out that poverty is the main impediment. “Our mortal enemy is poverty and we need to eliminate poverty in a free society.” “Sajith Premadasa is the only candidate who can do all that,” the Premier said.
