Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway: YarlungTsangpo River Bridge Completed

The railway line will facilitate build up of troops on the India China border in the Arunachal Pradesh sector amongst other areas on the Northern borders.

According to Xinhua News Agency, the Lhasa – Nyingchi (Linzhi) railway has completed paving the bridge to Rongxiang township YarlungTsangpo River on 01 December 2019.

This is the second bridge of Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway completing the work of paving across the YarlungTsangpo[Brahmaputra] River.

The YarlungTsangpo River Bridge in Rongxiang is located near Rongxiang, Sangri County, Shannan City, Tibet, with a total length of 4615 meters. It is the first sound barrier bridge across the YarlungTsangpo River and the second longest bridge on the Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway.

The sound barrier uses an aluminium alloy sound-absorbing panel with a height of 2.4 meters. The effective area covered by the sound barrier has an average noise reduction of more than 30 decibels, which has established a green barrier for compatriots of all ethnic groups along the Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway.

China Railway’s 11th Bureau was officially started the laying work since October 2018. They extended the railway from Lhasa to Nyingchi at a speed of 6 rack holes. At present it has completed 1298 rack holes and has laid 114 kilometre railway track. The entire railway line is expected to be laid by the end of 2020.

The Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway has a total length of 435.48 kilometres and a designed speed of 160 kilometres per hour. It is the first electrified railway in Tibet and has crossed the YarlungTsangpo River 16 times. After being opened to traffic, it will play an important role in driving economic development along the line, improving people’s livelihood, and promoting connectivity within and outside Tibet.

Comments – The main transportation choice between Lhasa and Nyingchi so far is highway, which takes about 7-8 hours to travel from Lhasa to Nyingchi by road. Or if you want go to Nyingchi (NyingchiMainling Airport) by plane from Lhasa (Lhasa Gonggar Airport), there are two direct 40-minute flights opened by Shenzhen Airlines and Tibet Airlines every day for your convenience.

The railway between Lhasa and Nyingchi has been under construction. It is estimated that it will take about 2 or 3 hours from Lhasa to Nyingchi when the railway come into operation.
