Indian Army has created the new post of Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Strategy) or DCOAS (S) for operational synergy.

DCOAS S will coordinate the work of directors-general of military operations (DGMO), military intelligence (DGMI), operational logistics (DGOL), perspective planning (DGPP) and information warfare (DGIW) at the Army HQs as per the Times of India.

These directorates were under different heads in the past while it will now ensure that the same is under a unitary staff officer who will also be directly the principal staff officer to the Chief of the Army Staff.

Earlier the Vice Chief of the Army Staff was controlling the intelligence and operations as well as the perspective planning.

In addition the creation of the directorate general of information warfare is also relevant given the current circumstances where the information and the media domain have assumed importance.

This is also a part of the overall restructuring at the Army Hqs undertaken under the former Army Chief and present Chief of the Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat.

Given the likely resistance in the case of increase in the number of three star generals the Army has ensured that the new post has been created offsetting the Director General Rashtriya Rifles (DGRR).
