India Nepal Boundary – Kailali Dispute Resolved Locally
Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) obstructed the construction of a river embankment in Kailali for encroaching on No Man’s Land on the Mohana River near Tikapur Municipality-7, claiming that the land lies on the Indian side.
After a joint inspection by local representatives of Nepal and India and agreement not to obstruct the construction of physical infrastructure to be built along the river if such structure is built within the border of the two countries was reached
A Google Map was used to resolve the border dispute.
Pillar number 108 had been swept away by the river, and this had created a border dispute between the two sides. The Indian side had claimed the land between pillar numbers 107 and 109, refusing to accept pillar number 108 as a border point. The missing pillar was tracked by using the Google Map.
Apart form Tikapur there is a dispute in Dhanghadhi as well. A Nepal-India joint survey team postponed works of the four disputed border pillars located at Khatrola of Tikapur-8 and Fulbari of Dhangadhi-14. There was a need to shift the Khatrola-based pillar number 704/5 and repair Fulbari-based pillars number 742, 742/1, 752/2 and 742/3.
The issue has come even as Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on 17 November called for India to pull back troops from Kalapani, which he claimed is a Nepali territory. He was addressing the first meeting of the National Youth Association, the sister wing of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) in the capital, PM Oli said, “The government is capable enough to safeguard the country’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.” Oli said that the government will remove Indian border forces from the occupied Kalapani and will, “I request our neighbor to recall its troops from there,” as per Republica report.
“This patriotic government won’t let anyone take even an inch of Nepali land. The neighboring country should withdraw its troops from our land,” the prime minister said.
“The government has everyone’s support on the issues of nationalism and national sovereignty. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all for their support to the government. But in order to show you as extra-patriotic, it is inappropriate to carry out unruly activities. We would resolve the issue through diplomacy,” said Oli.
The dispute has arisen due to variation in interpretation of the course of the Mahakali River in the area with both sides claiming the same to own advantage.
The depth of resentment in Nepal over the issue of Kalapani being included in the Map issued by Survey of India is evident as Dr Govinda KC, a surgeon activist of Nepal who was staging his 17th hunger-strike demanding reforms in medical sector, decided to halt his strike in solidarity to support the government on the boundary issue.
Dr Govinda Kc crusader for reforms in medical education has urged Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to correct a recently-released Indian political map that placed Nepali territories Kalapani and Limpiyadhura inside Indian borders writing a letter to Prime Minister Modi via Indian Embassy in Kathmandu, Dr KC stated that encroachment upon Nepali territory by the southern neighbor has hurt the sentiment of Nepali people.
KC ended his hunger strike stating that the public sentiment is now being focused on the issue of border encroachment by India.
