A press conference on China’s military reform was held by the country’s Defence Ministry. Spokesman Yang Yujun introduced the targets and tasks of the newly-established theater commands.

We have established the Eastern, Southern, Western, Northern and Central Theater Command. The establishment of the five theater commands is under the principle that the Central Military Commission takes charge of the overall military administration, theater commands focus on combat and the different military branches pursue their own development,Yang said.

The move is determined by China’s national security environment and the responsibilities taken by its military.

It will facilitate the building of the joint battle system and strengthen joint command. The five theater commands will better safeguard national sovereignty, security and interests while upholding regional stability and world peace.

The joint battle command system is required to be absolutely loyal, resourceful in fighting, efficient in commanding and courageous and capable of winning wars.

The theater commands are responsible for dealing with security threats in their respective strategic scopes, maintaining peace, containing wars and winning wars, noting their pivotal role in safeguarding the country’s overall national security and military strategies, Yang said.
